Christmas Vacation 2024 part 3

Cline Butte Ruins

Goal 1: Visit Cline Point Ruins

Goal 2: Hike

Goal 3: Collect samples of White Clay for slip

Goal 4: Collect Hematite

Goal 5: Place pots

We set out this day, the day after Christmas for a long razor ride to another part of the Mogollon Rim (read part 2 for explanations). Our bellies still full from Ribeye steak dinner the night before. The ride was long and a bit tiring but fun at the same time. We ventured around many places that we had found white spots from our OnX maps (like google earth) to see if they were worth collecting for painting pots white. The day was slipping away from us to no avail. We had lunch close to Bailey Ruins (we think was Bailey Ruins) and carried on. Spot after spot we had not really found a good contender for the slip. Feeling as though we wasted a day, we saw one spot on the map and decided to drive the distance to see. We hiked about 1000 ft up a hill to find the white spot on our map, and low and behold we think we struck gold. The white we found was smooth and creamy. Only time will tell once it is processed, applied and fired.

We looked at each other debating if we would have time to get to the Cline Point Ruins to hide pots before it got dark? We thought we didn’t come this far not to, even if we were hiking down in the dark.

So there is the clue, Cline Point Ruins.

On the way home it was dark and a couple hours later, after trying to take a power line road (which was a bad idea) we turned around and took another route. All routes seemed to take us longer and longer. Completely tired and hungry, we decided to take the last six miles (which was much closer) on paved roads. Just in the nick of time, we turned on our dirt road just after passing a police officer going the other way. Feeling like we had just outrun the law by the skin of our teeth, our hearts were racing with excitement, we were back at camp.

On May 4, 2025, while visiting Cline Point Ruin with friends from Andy Ward’s Ancient Pottery Club, Angela Dazlich spotted a shiny white ancient pot lodged in some tangled brush in the Kiva. I wanted to take a photo of it after being cautioned not to disturb the pottery, since it looked like an offering. As I knelt down, the shiny tag with a QR Code was gleaming. Andy said “That’s one of Trevor and Lolli’s! This was really fun! Thank you!!

Me and my kids where out on one of our trips to collect materials and as usual we finish off our trip with a hike up to cline ruin. When we reached the top my daughter very excited yelled for everyone to come look at what she had found. Our first thought was it may be some kind of offering but on closer inspection we saw the tag and we were excited to be able to keep such a beautiful find. Thanks for making this little adventure possible!

We are so glad you found this and excited that it was found by a child. Can you describe which none you found? There is 2 at this general location!
